Think about it. The entire middle section of our Bible is devoted to politics. Right there is a book called JUDGES! Sounds political! Then there are two books called 1 & 2 KINGS! Sounds political! There is also a book called Nehemiah, which is about a GOVERNOR. Then there is the Book of Esther, about a QUEEN, FILLED with all kinds of political intrigue!
But from cover to cover, the Bible is FILLED with POLITICS!
- Exodus starts with the confrontation between God and PHAROAH
- Leviticus is all about LAWS, religious AND civil
- Numbers continues with laws and principles of religious and civil government.
- Deuteronomy – the title literally means “Second Law”
- Joshua is about war and conquering nations and dividing the territory into tribal districts territories.
- 1 & 2 Samuel are about a Judge named Samuel who was also a prophet and his appointment of Israel’s first two kings. He, the PROPHET, appointed the king! Then we see the story of these kings and all the political issues that arise between them.
- 1 & 2 Chronicles are all about the kings of Judah and Israel, which ones were bad, which ones were good, and the result
- Ezra is full of politics in regards to the rebuilding of the Temple
- Then come the Psalms – most of which were written by a KING! King David.
- Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs – also written by a KING! King Solomon.
- Then come all the prophets: Isaiah Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, etc.. ALL were FILLED with POLITICS! POLITICS OF THE HIGHEST ORDER! Prophets constantly confronted kings and political systems. Isaiah was a “court prophet.” In other words, he was on the cabinet of several kings! Jeremiah is one of the most incredible examples of political intrigue ever written, navigating the challenging waters of patriotism vs. submission to God.
“Ah, but that’s Old Testament!”
Jesus was one of the biggest political revolutionaries that ever existed. “What? But he said render under Caesar what is Caesar’s.” EXACTLY. Render unto Caesar! There are things to render unto Caesar! Especially as those who live in a Democracy (which Jesus and the apostles did not live in), we have a responsibility to be involved in politics.
Now, it is right that Jesus did not call for political revolution against the Roman Empire, BUT he did confront the political forces that essentially were the “rulers” over him. What many people don’t understand is that Rome gave Israel a unique status among all the provinces of its empire. The Jewish people of Palestine had CONSIDERABLE autonomy to rule themselves. MUCH more than any other conquered territory in the Roman Empire. So who were Jesus’ rulers? The Priests, Lawyers, Sadducees and Pharisees… which he regularly LAMBASTED for their hypocrisy and sin, challenging their man-made laws. He called them a “brood of vipers” and “whitewashed tombs!” He even called King Herod a “fox.”
In the Book of Acts, the Apostle Paul regularly asserted his Roman citizenship. He also spoke directly to governors and kings, albeit respectfully, but still confrontationally. The epistles even have many political elements, such as Paul’s discussion of national Israel in Romans 11 and the government of antichrist in 1 & 2 Thessalonians. There are certainly many political implications to what the epistles address in terms of morality and civil society.
As for the calls to submit to government. In a Democracy WE are the government! I do not bow to any man! I am obligated as a good citizen to follow the dictates of the majority UNTIL they violate God’s principles. Then I MUST disobey (Acts 5:29 – “We ought to obey God rather than men.”)
And the Bible ends with the Book of Revelation which is about the KINGDOMS of this world becoming the KINGDOM of the Lord and of His Christ! A FULL BLOWN POLITICAL TAKEOVER!
Who says the Bible and politics don’t mix! My contention is, if you are biblical, you will be POLITICAL.
When my Bible says “Thou shalt not murder” and politicians legalize a form of murder for a class of humans, I CANNOT stay silent or inactive! When in my Bible Jesus says, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife…” (Matthew 19:4-5), but an entire political party says a “we affirm that a male join with a male and a female shall join with a female” I must speak out against that.
"The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained." --George Washington
In my mind, there is no doubt this is the most important election in history. And I say history, not “lifetime,” not even in America… but in history because of the impact America has on therest of the world. I MAY be overly sensitive. As a person with prophetic gifts, I see all kinds of massive implications in this election. But I don’t think so because everybody is saying it!
I see this as a nation choosing who will be their god: the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ OR another god. Our money says, “In God We Trust,” but which god? Maybe the paper or metal it’s printed or engraved on?
If you are truly biblical, you will HAVE to be POLITICAL.
As I mentioned earlier, UNLIKE Jesus’ day, you are part of a democracy. You actually have a responsibility. YOU are the government! Every time there is an election, you have a responsibility to rule! God will hold you accountable to your responsibility!
Matthew 5:13 - 16 - “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
We need to hold the government accountable. $16 trillion debt. We have a Senate that has not passed a budget in YEARS! SHAME! It is the height of cowardice! They don’t want any voting record that might hinder their chances of re-election. Shame! They need to be held accountable by us. In my opinion, ALL OF THEM up for re-election must be removed! That’s our job!
Yet in many churches today, there will be a call for BIGGER government! MORE programs! MORE money spent! MORE bureaucracies! MORE power for Washington …and less responsibility for us. They will be preaching that we need the government to take greater care of the people.
Friends, this is a slap in the face of God!
This past week in my Bible reading, I was struck by a story. I don’t know why I was led to it, but one very early morning as I was seeking the Lord, he took me to 1 Samuel 8. This is an amazing passage, EXTREMELY relevant to America. The children of Israel were asking Samuel to choose a king for them. Samuel was heartbroken. But God told Samuel in verse 7, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.”
Israel wanted a different kind of government than God had given them. They wanted a government that was more centralized. They wanted a government that was more powerful, and one that had promise of taking care of them. They wanted a government that was like the other nations! (Sound familiar?).
They no longer wanted GOD to be their king. They wanted the king to be their God!
America has a choice Tuesday. Whether they want God to be their government, or their government to be their god!
Many people don’t realize that God had a design for Israel’s government. God wanted his nation to be a CONFEDERACY. There would be 12 distinct tribes. These tribes would have their own rulers, and would maintain the governing of their own people, with a very loose connection to each other as a NATION. Each tribe would even have its own territory, but there would be ONE Tabernacle, ONE place of worship, ONE GOD! And from time to time God raised up judges that would bring the confederacy together for two purposes: WAR and REVIVAL! THAT’S ALL!
Our Founding Fathers saw this in the scriptures. As they saw 13 distinct colonies with their own governments and territories, a great debate arose. Should we become one centralized government with power centered in the capital? Or should the colonies have a loose confederation? In God’s wisdom, and having had the experience of the abuse of power when it was centralized in one place, England, our FATHERS wisely chose the way of confederation! THEY KNEW THE EVIL OF BIG GOVERNMENT. They knew the evil of big, BAD government!
SO just like Israel with it’s 12 tribes, America would be born with 13 states! It was the most ingenious political system ever put in place by man because it was a GODLY political system blessed by God, based on the scriptures! Because there was no big centralized government, there was unprecedented LIBERTY! With SMALL government, there was room for GOD to be the one really in charge! Because the Bible was THE textbook in our schools, America was essentially a new Israel: 13 tribes, under God, yet indivisible, with liberty and justice for all! We were essentially a THEOCRACY, NOT formally, but practically. Our human government was small to begin with, and it was based on God’s Word and Laws to begin with. Therefore, God was indeed our only King!
Big government is a rejection of God’s government.
BIG GOVERNMENT IS EVIL! Our forefathers escaped big government. God wanted to warn his people of the evils of big, bad government. If you read the rest of 1 Samuel 8, it spells out the curses and abuses of big government. And it closes with a poignant statement from God, “And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.” WOW!
So the government keeps growing. Everybody needs to go to http://www.usdebtclock.org. Our government has hit stage four cancer. It is out of control. Can anything stop it? Only God. Perhaps, WE can start a treatment regimen by making the right choices this Tuesday. "To preserve [the] independence [of the people,] we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude." --Thomas Jefferson to S. Kercheval, 1816.
Although we can possibly treat the cancer of big bad government, and possibly cause it to go into remission, big bad government will one day fully manifest in the earth. Revelation 13 says of the one-world, big, bad government ruler who will soon arise, “He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” FULL and TOTAL CONTROL! …UNTIL THE KING OF KINGS AND THE LORD OF LORDS RETURNS!
“When the government fears the people there is liberty; when the people fear the government there is tyranny.” – Thomas Jefferson
"They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -- Benjamin Franklin
